How Do I Maintain My Security Cameras?
July 31st, 2019
When you have a set of surveillance cameras for your home or business, you need to spend some time customizing their setup and maintaining them. This maintenance isn’t hard and usually doesn’t require an expert, but it still needs doing if you want the best image quality possible and no missing footage. This maintenance can take several forms.
Security cameras usually transmit information directly to a DVR or computer, and you should consider this computer part of your security system. That means you should keep the machine in good shape, go over the footage regularly, and backup everything important onto exterior hard drives or a cloud server.
Exterior cameras need durable cases that can handle the rain, sun, and wind. However, these cases don’t last forever. Inspect your outside cameras at least twice per year to see if moisture is getting in, if the case is still in one piece, if the cables are still sound, and so on.
Hackers are constantly looking for new exploits in security camera software and programmers are constantly updating their software to close exploits, add new functions, and make the software more efficient. If you see an update show up for your camera software or your operating system, you should install it as soon as your camera system is safe to reboot.
Aside from the things you do yourself, you should also bring in a professional security company to inspect your security system at least once per year. Professionals can spot issues you might have missed or forgotten about, plus they know about new security upgrades you might want.
Security cameras are an important part of any home or business security system, but they can malfunction if you don’t keep an eye on them. At DWS Tech, we supply homes and businesses with the best camera brands around.
